Is Your Doctor Burned Out?

Is Your Doctor Burned Out?

Recent research has shown that the risk of job burnout is significantly higher in the medical profession compared to most other professions. The work-life balance usually comes under severe pressure in a highly demanding profession of a doctor. The latest study in this field shows that almost one in two doctors in the United States report at least one symptom of burnout.

The doctors and dentists who deal directly with patients are more at risk, and their rate of vulnerability is considerably higher compared to the rest of the general working population. Overburdened doctors are more likely to get caught up in relationship challenges and alcohol misuse. In some cases, the job-related stress can also lead to gaps in their professionalism, reduce their commitment to quality of care, and heighten the chances of medical errors.

Job burnout among doctors is one of the key reasons for a growing number of doctors seeking early retirement. This is a potentially serious social challenge, considering the medical needs of an aging population. When the society loses the services of a doctor, it not only hurts the personal prospects of the doctor, but also the society suffers the loss of a valuable healthcare professional.

These new findings have been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The data presented as a part of this study is based on a detailed survey of 7,288 doctors. The study was conducted by researchers from Mayo Clinic and the American Medical Association.

The study revealed that 46 percent of physicians experienced at least one symptom of job burnout, 38 percent of the doctors faced high levels of emotional exhaustion, 30 percent experience a high degree of depersonalization, and 13 percent suffered from a low sense of personal accomplishment. The authors of the study conclude that the doctors in the United States are burning out at an alarming rate.
